OBFA’s primary design objective was to seamlessly reintegrate this previously vacant plot into the existing streetscape, ensuring that the new development respects and enhances the character of the surrounding environment. The scheme comprises six two-bedroom units, each carefully arranged in an "upside-down" configuration, with the primary living spaces elevated above street level. This design choice maximizes natural light, provides privacy for residents, and enhances the relationship between the homes and the public realm.
The architectural form takes inspiration from the town’s traditional gable-ended buildings and varied roofscape, creating a contemporary response that harmonizes with Rathdowney’s existing vernacular. A restrained yet rich material palette was selected to complement the surrounding streetscape. The use of buff brick and carefully chosen tones introduces a textural depth that integrates seamlessly into the town while adding a subtle modern distinction.
This project not only delivers high-quality housing but also acts as a catalyst for renewal, breathing new life into an overlooked part of Rathdowney. By respecting the past while embracing a contemporary design language, the development successfully stitches together the old and new, reinforcing the identity and liveliness of the town.
